One of the best things about the Slidabox is the fact that it is a trailer, not a
caravan. It needs no special insurance, registration or licence to tow one.
So long as you stay below the towing weight limit of your car and fit the
right lights, reflectors and a number plate you're good to go. This applies in Europe,
laws may be different in your country so check first!
Woodenwidget will plant 5 trees on your behalf if you buy any of our plans.
Boxes are great. They are the easiest shape to build and offer the most
internal volume. The Slidabox can also be adapted to suit your needs and
personalised in many different ways. Unlike many expanding campers the
Slidabox is fully insulated so you will be guaranteed a good nights sleep
whatever the weather is doing outside.
If you build yourself a Slidabox be prepared to deal with astonished campers
who will not have seen anything like it before.
The bright and spacious interior is lit by an overhead skylight hatch and
two windows although you can fit more if you wish. There is sitting headroom
only but there is plenty of headroom under the rear hatch. The galley area
is huge and there is a lot of storage. Unlike many small campers, once the
drawer is open there is access to the galley so even if it's raining, you
won't have to go outside to make a cup of tea.
The Slidabox is a lightweight 2 berth expanding caravan designed to fit on a
small unbraked trailer with a gross capacity of 500 kilos. The Slidabox
weighs less than 300 kilos unladen and although it is not aerodynamic it
doesn't need to be as it's so compact it tucks in behind the tow car hardly
affecting fuel consumption. When you arrive at your campsite simply slide
the drawer out to create a very comfy insulated two metre long bed. Under
the hatch at the rear is a large kitchen area with lots of storage space.
Add a curtain and there's a private area to shower or change in.
The step by step illustrated instructions walk you through the entire build
process. They include a lot of further information on all aspects of the
build, from the materials you need and how to find and modify them. Unlike a
traditional caravan, the Slidabox is constructed using the insulating layer
as a structural element. This creates an extremely light but very strong
structure. The rear hatch is held open by an automatic gravity system and
the plans explain in detail how to make it. Or you can just prop the hatch
open with a stick!
The Slidabox plans are metric but allow for the use of Imperial
materials. The height of the Slidabox is based on the width of a sheet
of plywood. No special materials or skills are needed to build a
Slidavan but it will take about 150 hours to make one, less if you
decide to build a simpler and lighter version without the drawer. The
Slidabox is designed to fit on almost any small trailer. You don't need
a lot of space to build a Slidabox as all the panels can be constructed
on the floor panel.
